The first computer study to simulate the impact of white roofs on cities suggests that they can help cool cities and cut air-conditioning use. The study found that painting roofs white could lead to a 33% reduction in what’s called the urban heat island effect, meaning higher temperatures caused by tar roofs and other artificial surfaces.
